Challenge

We were excited to tackle this challenging search. It was necessary to find people at the most reputable US companies in the world who were qualified for the high-level positions at this world renowned company. It was also necessary to find people who were motivated to relocate to China for a mandatory minimum stay of at least two years. Another complication was salary because Chinese employees earn around 40% less than their counterparts in the US. Consequently, each candidate’s motivation to explore the opportunity in China had to be somewhat intangible.

Approach

Our strategy for the search included identifying our target candidates. Since our client was a global software company that was a leader in many industries nationally and internationally, we chose to target their competitors in the US. Once we narrowed down the target companies, we looked for high-level managers and people with significant management experience and excellent reputations. Once we got to this level, we started asking for numerous referrals, especially for people who had a background in China. We also solicited referrals from our wide network of previous connections. Many people were happy to refer us to people who may be interested in learning more about opportunities in China. Consequently, we found that there were a large number of US-based employees who had been educated in China but who came over to the US to work. For many different reasons, some of these candidates were interested in relocating back to China for at least a few years. In addition, there were some candidates who were interested in exploring opportunities because of the great learning experience associated with these positions and the phenomenal reputation of the company.

Throughout the recruiting process, we encountered many difficulties including the challenges and commitment associated with moving overseas. However, in initially and accurately assessing a candidate’s internal motivations, we worked through the challenges while helping both the candidate and the client fulfill their goals.

Outcome of Search

We were led to many qualified candidates and ultimately we placed an incredible Program Manager with one of the teams in China. He recently started his new position and is very thankful for everyone’s perseverance in getting him onboard. Likewise, the company is thrilled to have some high-level US talent leading its efforts in China.
